The TDC timing mark is on the lower timing cover, and it does point the timing mark on the hub/balancer to the passenger bank intake cam. You will find another mark on the hub, for approximately 43 degrees advanced position. When lined up with this mark the crank is down a bit for maximum valve clearance when needed.

Bmw 316i Compact I get what you trying to do but it all comes down to the cars ecu, because e36 was pre 2000 it still has the "unprogramable" ecu, technically you can program it but you are not going to get anywhere far with it with the lack of options of the engine limit itself.
The engine warms up but only to about 30-40% (With 50% being 12 O'clock, 25% being the first tick mark, and 0% being blue cold), and I read it should be right at 12 O'clock. Both tubes coming off the radiator are warm to the touch after the engine warms up.
